Project Mothership

2024

I worked as a lead designer and art director at the student project Project Mothership in my master’s program. I also pitched the game concept to recruit a team of over 20 members. Project Mothership is a co-op action-adventure game where players explore alien worlds, fight enemies and solve puzzles to collect as many resources as possible before their oxygen runs out.

Key Contributions:
  • Art Director: My role involved extensive team and project management for a team of four members, including planning weekly meetings, ensuring deadlines were met and providing regular feedback to maintain a cohesive visual style.
  • Concept Art: Especially at the beginning of the project, I created moodboards and concept art to help the team understand and align with my visual vision for Project Mothership.
  • Animations: To support the 3D artists, I contributed minor animations for the main characters, such as item pickup and object interaction.
  • Lead Design: I pitched the core game idea to the team and coordinated with all departments to discuss and implement gameplay adjustments.

Concept Art

Character Art

For both main characters, I provided initial visual concepts for the art team to iterate on. Clear, distinguishable silhouettes were key to help players quickly identify their character. Since the game is set on a hostile planet, the characters naturally had to be designed as astronauts with sturdy suits and tools that can also be used to defend themselves.

Additionally, I provided a visual key concept for a robotic enemy in the game, inspired by visual characteristics of spiders and scorpions.

Environmental Art

The game is set inside of a volcanic crater with salt pillars, strange crystals and a rocky surface.

I provided simple thumbnails to communicate my vision for the game’s atsmosphere to the art department.
